The recent hype surrounding boxing legend Mike Tyson re-entering the ring reminded me of the time when I confronted the hard-hitting heavyweight back in 2008. Surprisingly it was me chasing after him rather than the other way around. The often controversial former world champion - who held a record of 50 wins from 59 fights, with 44 of them being knock outs - was appearing at a sporting dinner at the Federation Brewery in Dunston, Gateshead. I was instructed by my then employers, The Northern Echo, to try and get some shots of 'Iron Mike' before he entered the building.
Not knowing an exact time of his arrival and failing to get further information from the venue staff, round one was definitely in favour of the man from New York City. With a front and back entrance to the club, the chance of a positive outcome was in the balance. However, when a rather impressive looking vehicle zoomed into the arena and sped around to the rear door, I sensed my opportunity. Dancing across the tarmac, my telephoto lens was quickly in position for me to punch the shutter button and fire off a successful combination of shots, before 'The Baddest Man on the Planet' was ushered into the building. It was an unforgettable matchup from my point of view. For Tyson, it was probably an insignificant moment in his, to say the least, eventful life.
