It was great to be back covering football and rugby this weekend after a number of weeks since my last foray into the sporting world. Although I take pictures almost on a daily basis, photographing sport has its own nuances. For starters, you have to be prepared to carry a lot of heavy equipment including large, weighty lenses and camera bodies, a laptop and even your own seat. You may experience bad weather so require waterproofs, not only for yourself but also for your equipment. Finally, and this might just be me, you have to cope with the anxiety of worrying about being in the right place at the right time, and fear of missing any potential major incidents during the course of a game. Despite these challenges, it's an enjoyable and rewarding experience.
On Friday night I attended the England U20s v Scotland U20s rugby union match at Kingston Park in Newcastle. I was commissioned to cover the England side and it proved to be a busy evening of action with the team scoring 9 tries. The challenge for me was finding enough time between each tally increase to download, edit and send the images.
Then it was an earlyish start on Saturday to head to the Stadium of Light for the lunchtime kick off between Sunderland and Hull City. On this occasion I was covering the match for the visiting team, Hull. With Sunderland positioned towards the top of the Championship table and Hull just above the relegation zone, the odds were certainly in favour of the former. Sunderland did indeed dominate possession, however, in true underdog-style, Hull came away with a 1-0 victory.
An enjoyable working weekend in which I managed to avoid the rain and saw victories for the two teams I was commissioned to cover. I look forward to my next sporting fixture.
