Re-building the Red Wall

What an incredible turnaround it has been for Labour as the Conservatives suffer their worst defeat in general election history. I'm still catching up on sleep after playing my small part in the contest, covering the constituency count in Darlington.

The town followed the trend of much of the country with Labour party candidate Lola McEvoy victorious over the incumbent Tory candidate Peter Gibson who had served as Darlington's MP since the previous election in 2019 - 2,298 seats being the difference. Interestingly Labour received less votes than in 2019 (16,621 compared with 17,607) and it would appear that the 6,852 votes cast for Reform UK has played a major role in the outcome.

It is always a pleasure and a privilege to cover a general election - having a ringside view of the inner working of the democratic process and the political system. Only time will tell as to whether or not this is the dawn of a new, bigger, brighter future or just cheap talk and jargon to entice the electorate.
