Shed Heaven

It's already been a week since a tent, sleeping bag, stove and other essentials were packed in readiness to attend the 14th Deer Shed festival at the lush, rural setting of Baldersby Park near Thirsk in North Yorkshire. Not only was there a finely curated array of musical talent on display, but the weather also proved to be true to forecast with sunshine and blue skies encompassing the three day event.

This was the third year in a row that I have spent the last full weekend in July watching a variety of bands and artists in the beautiful surroundings of God's own county. And I’ve always been impressed with the selection of musicians and performers the organisers pick to appear each year. Many are fairly new to fame and publicity meaning the lineups for the afternoons are somewhat of a mystery to the likes of me, but rarely fail to impress.

Action from the Main Stage including The Go! Team, CMAT, Bess Atwell, Bombay Bicycle Club, BC Camplight, Kokoko!, Jalen Ngonda, Deadletter, The Coral, and Liz Lawrence.

Although far from the scale of Glastonbury or Reading/Leeds, there are many plusses to a smaller gathering such as Deer Shed. The site is easy to walk around with just five minutes between the two main stages. Similarly the distances between camping areas and the main arena are minimal. A further advantage over some of the more famous musical events is that food and drink (including alcohol) can be taken into the main arena meaning that attendance can operate on more of a budget.

Action from the In The Dock Stage including Fat Dog, Madmadmad, Baba Ali, Personal Trainer and Oneda.

I look forward to another adventure in Baldersby Park next year, furthering my musical education of both established and new bands, and having a good boogie in the middle of a field.
