The Kids Are Alright

Last Thursday evening I had the pleasure of covering the annual Volunteering Awards at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington. I photograph a number of awards events throughout the year, and found this one to be particularly heart warming.

The youth of the day are often given a hard time and generalised as being uncaring and lacking in compassion. Perhaps this is my view to a certain extent, particularly when I think about how I was at the age of 17-18, which is why I felt moved by the stories that were shared at QE College last week.

Hundreds of hours of volunteering, sleeping out on the streets to raise awareness of youth homelessness and donating books to children were just some of the selfless acts undertaken by students. I congratulate them all for trying to make the world a better place.
