The Magical Machinery Tour

It wasn't your average bus trip - high viz vests and hard hats being distributed as the coach left the Skills Academy building for a tour of the vast Teesworks site. A week ago, this was the third excursion of its type open to the general public to view the changes that have taken place on the former Redcar Steelworks site.

The brown field area is very much a work in progress, however, the landscape has changed considerably from a few years ago with new structures such as the vast SeAH wind monopile factory reaching completion on an area which once housed the South Bank coke oven including the Dorman Long tower. A newly-constructed quay also at South Bank is now operational and other areas of the site are nearing a state of readiness for the building of further new industry. Carbon-capturing and green and blue hydrogen production being just some of the exciting work to take place on Teesside.

For those on the tour, it was an eye-opening experience, being able to see for themselves the work that has taken place over the last few years. Skills Academy development manager Neil Young provided a fountain of knowledge throughout the journey and the 90-120 minute duration was just about long enough to allow a complete circuit of the site.

I look forward to my next visit to Teesworks and seeing the further progression in industrial development taking place.
