The Stages of Life

It's been an interesting few days full of movement, theatrics, emotion and razzmatazz - and I'm not referring to the General Election. My latest assignments have included trips to both the Hippodrome and Hullabaloo theatres in Darlington, and a Pride event in Hartlepool.

Theatres always provide a great backdrop for photos with their purpose-built lighting and darkened backgrounds, which really make the performers stand out. What can be tricky is how the lights change - getting stronger, weaker, changing colour - meaning exposure readings for the camera also have to adapt. With that in mind, the display simulation function of the modern day mirrorless digital cameras such as the Canon R6 mk2 (which I often use) really comes into its own, enabling me to adapt my settings within a split second.

Hartlepool Pride took place predominantly outside in bright sunshine creating different challenges with regard to lighting and exposure. The conditions were hugley welcome however, with summer proving to be somewhat of a wet affair to date. Flamboyant outfits and a relaxed, fun feel took centre stage in Church Square.

Another week full of variety at events that were a real privilege to cover.
